Indian Government to take selected Dalits to U.S. and U.K. on Ambedkar Tour

The Government is making continues attempts to woo Dalits for their vote bank and now the Sarkar is getting ready to send selected Dalits on a study tour to institutes in United States of America and in United Kingdom where Dr. BR Ambedkar has studied.

As per the ministry of social justice and empowerment, the University Grants Commission will select 100 eligible students, who will be visiting Columbia University and London School of Economics as a part of Dr Ambedkar Foundation's Study Tour. The eligibility criterion for the tour includes at least one full time graduation, family income less than 4.5 lakhs per annum etc; also people who have not been to overseas will be preferred.

The last date for submission of applications is June 30.

"In a weeklong trip, 50 students will be sent to each place. The idea is to make the students understand how a Dalit boy rose to reach such institutions of repute in the UK and the US. The trip is to motivate and mobilize the Dalit youths to reach out to the world," said an official of the ministry.

The UGC will be the nodal point, who also calls the applicants.

The students will also visit Ambedkar's two-storey house in London that is being bought by the Maharashtra government. The architect of India's constitution had lived in the house during his stay in London.
