India’s NSG Application Remained Undecided As China Led The Opposition; Switzerland, Too Joined The Group

India’s NSG application remained undecided at the Nuclear Suppliers Group’s plenary meeting at Seoul as China stood firm on its stand that India, as a non NPT (Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty) country cannot become the member of the 48-nation elite group. However, the top countries such as United States, United Kingdom and France remained as strong supporters of India’s admission into the NSG.

Apart from China, 10 other countries, including Switzerland, which had earlier agreed to support India in the NSG while prime minister Narendra Modi visited Switzerland, have opposed India’s NSG application on grounds of NPT agreement.

Chief Chinese negotiator, Wang Qun, had earlier said that India cannot become the NSG member as it has not signed the NPT agreement and to become a member of NSG a country has to sign NPT. This rule has not been made by China but by the international community.

Wang had warned that if the exceptions are allowed here or there are no questions of NPT, the international non-proliferation will collapse together.

While answering a question whether China is blocking India’s admission into the NSG Wang said that NSG, till now has not agreed to any agenda item on participation of non-NPT countries hence there is no point of China supporting or opposing India’s membership. He has made it clear that China is not supporting Pakistan as it is also a non-NPT country.

The development has proved that Chinese president has not replied to Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s request to make a fair and objective assessment of India’s application which is before the Seoul plenary made at the meeting between the two leaders at the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
