PM Modi’s Japan Visit: India-Japan Civil Nuclear Deal On Cards

According to the reports, India and Japan is all set to sign civil nuclear cooperation agreement during the proposed visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Japan next week. Reports said the both the countries have already finished the internal procedures for the much awaited agreement.

Although the two countries had already discussed and sealed a broad agreement for cooperation in civil nuclear energy when the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited New Delhi last December, the deal was not signed due to few technical and legal issues.

Vikas Swarup, External Affairs Ministry official spokesperson, has clarified that all the internal procedures including legal and technical aspects of the text of the pact have been solved by both the countries.

Answering on signing the agreement, during PM Modi’s visit to Japan on November 11 he said, “I cannot pre-judge the outcome of the talks.”

After the disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in 2011, there was some mixed comments on going ahead with India on the nuclear cooperation.

According to the experts, as Japan is one of the biggest player in nuclear energy market, atomic deal with Japan will open the doors for various US-based nuclear plant makers such as Washington Electric Corporation as well as GE Energy Inc, to open plants in India as all of them have Japanese investments.

During his visit PM Modi will also meet the Emperor of Japan as well as will hold an annual summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
