Special NSG Meet Likely On November 11

The special meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group is likely to be held in Vienna on November 11, where India will once again make its bid to join the 48-member elite group.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi government is stepping up the efforts to join NSG, which has stalled by China over the issue of nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. PM Modi government’s efforts even added meeting and interaction with China at the senior levels to discuss the NSG issue.

Earlier on Monday, the officials of China and India held threadbare discussion over India’s induction to the NSG. The discussions will continue on Friday in Hyderabad, where the National Security Adviser Ajit Doval will meet Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi.

India is seeking place in the Nuclear Suppliers Group over the basis of the 2008 waivers by the NSG and its clean track record in nuclear sector.

Previously, in Nuclear Suppliers Group Plenary meeting in Seoul, China had opposed India’s induction into the NSG despite huge facilitation by the United States, Russia and France along with Australia and Japan. At the end, Australia and Mexico had pushed an agreement that the meeting would be held in November over the further discussion of India’s entry into the NSG.
