Kashmir Is A Bilateral Issue Between India And Pakistan: British PM Theresa May

The British Prime Minister Theresa May has reiterated Britain’s stand on Kashmir and said that UK’s position on Kashmir remains unchanged and it is bilateral issue between India and Pakistan to address.

The Prime Minister of Britain answered in the House of Commons during the weekly Prime Minister’s Question Session on Wednesday to a Pakistani-born Labor MP Yasmin Qureshi. Qureshi had asked whether Kashmir issue will be discussed during May’s visit to India next month.

The British PM in Parliament said, “I take the same view as this government has since it came into power, and indeed previously, which is that the issue of Kashmir is a matter for India and Pakistan to deal with and sort out.” Indicating that Kashmir most likely will not be on agenda when she will meet her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in India between November 6 and 8.

Qureshi had questioned, “Will the Prime Minister meet with me and cross-party colleagues to discuss the human rights abuses and the issue of self-determination for Kashmiri people, as was set out in the resolution of the UN in 1948 and can she raise this issue with the Indian Prime Minister.”

Theresa May, as British PM, will be arriving in New Delhi on November 6 for her first overseas bilateral visit outside Europe.

She is scheduled to inaugurate the India-UK Summit with PM Modi and will be holding talks with Modi before heading to Bengaluru.
