A Sikh Mother And Son Fighting For South Asian LGBT Community In United Kingdom

A Sikh duo of mother and son has become the voice of the marginalized Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual (LGBT) community in United Kingdom and they are raising voice against the discrimination coming in their ways in the country.

Manjinder Singh Sidhu, who is a master in Human Rights from University College, London has made various videos, few with his mother, in various languages, to offer advise to LGBT community and their family members. They are urging parents to accept natural sexual orientation of their children and move ahead in life.

Sidhu said to a leading newspaper daily that he was attracted to men when he was 13. He said, “God made me this way and I must accept it. I decided to focus on my studies, get a good job and live the life the universe has bestowed upon me.” It took another 14 years for him to confess about his sexual orientation to his parents.

Sidhu said, “I was 25, living in Israel, working for the United Nations and severely depressed as I had to hide this truth from them. One day I just texted them that I was a gay. Surprisingly, their reaction was very positive. They were relieved that their son was finally communicating with them and still loved them. This brought out my activism and I began to work to lift the `purdah' (veil) off LGBT topics in our community.”

He started with talking and spreading awareness from radio channel and television and started to shoot videos on the topic and started to upload on YouTube.

“I was approached by a lesbian from London with a request to shoot a video with my mother so that she could educate her mother on LGBTs. Initially, the video was meant to be for private use, but my mother gave the nod for making it public because of its immense potential to make a positive impact. We had no idea that it would go viral,” he said.

In many videos Sidhu’s mother Swaran Kaur can be seen giving advises to LGBT communities from her own experience of her son.

Sidhu has said that he is planning to come to India and conduct workshops in Chandigarh and Ludhiana and will work against the discrimination faced by the LGBT community in the country.
