In a fourth incident of robbery and attack in the 48-hours, a fruit dealer was shot by an unidentified assailant at Bikanpur village under English Bazaar police station in Malda district on Sunday night.

Sanjay Basak, a mango dealer who was badly injured was returning from a wedding on his motorcycle when he was stopped by a group of four on Amriti-Kaliachak state highway. They shot at him and as he fell off they attacked him with a sharp object.

Assailants robbed his mobile phone, Rs. 4,000 cash and his motorcycle and fled the scene leaving Basak on the road with a serious bullet injury. He was admitted into Malda Medical College and Hospital when he was spotted by passenger of passing vehicle.

According to reports, his family has been informed who have lodged a complaint on the issue at the English Bazaar Police Station, although no arrests have been made so far.

In the past two days, five injured persons have been admitted to the hospital from Malda in the similar incidents.

Earlier on Saturday, In a clash erupted at Kaliachak on acquiring a piece of land owned by the Railways, a shootout and hurling of bombs was occurred. A class 10 student was also injured in the incident. Two similar incident were reported at Manikchak on Sunday night in which two people were injured. Twenty-seven persons have been caught by the police in the case.

A senior police officer said, “These trouble-makers come from Jharkhand, cross the river and enter Kaliachak and Manikchak. We have arrested 27 and recovered several daggers and choppers from them. We have formed a special team to deal with the problem and are conducting regular raids at different places of the district”.
