Modi Government Does not Deserve Raghuram Rajan, Says P Chidambaram

Supporting the RBI Governer Raghuram Rajan, former foreign minister P Chidambaram said on Saturday that he wondered whether the Modi government deserved Raghuram Rajan and described him as one of the most outstanding economist in the world.

The RBI governor is currently being continuously targeted by a BJP MP Subramanin Swamy.

To a question whether Rajan should be given the second term as his 3-year term is to end in the first week of September, he said, “I am beginning to think whether this government deserves Dr Rajan.”

While interacting with the reporters in the Congress headquarters he fisrt chose to avoid any comments on Swamy’s allegations on Rajan and told that the Congress will speak only if the prime minister or the finance minister speak against Rajan.

“The UPA government appointed one of the most outstanding economists of the world as the RBI governor. We placed full confidence in him at that time and we continue to place full confidence in him today,” he said while defending the RBI governor.

He said that the Congress government had the best relationship with all the central bank governors including the current one. He added, “The world over, finance minister and central bank governor engage in such a dialogue that it does not mean the finance minister questions the competence of the RBI Governor. Each one approaches economy from his or her own perspective. Government's perspective is growth. Central bank's perspective is monetary stability.”

The former union minister commented on the current Commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s remark over Rajan’s one eye comment and said a vote can be taken right here on who is right and who is wrong.

Earlier, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy had sent two letters to the prime minister Narendra Modi and demanded Rajan’s immediate removal alleging he is not mentally fully Indian.

Prime minister has said to a newspaper that the reappointment of the RBI governor should not be the media’s concern.
