IIT Students Made A Car, To Race On Global Stage

Seventy five IIT Bombay students made a racing car which is set to compete against the models designed by over 100 student teams across the globe. The car named as ‘ORCA’, took nine months to get ready, according to the students.

Students launched ORCA on Sunday at the Campus Auditorium along with NRB Bearings, Tata Motors, CEAT Tyres and other sponsors.

The Car is to represent India in the Formula Student UK competition, an annual contest where electric and IC engine cars are judged on the type of engineering and the presentation skill with respect to the other parameters. IIT-B team have been participating in the competition since last five years and are the only team to receive prestigious FS award for design improvement three consecutive years.

Rishabh Kappasia, a 4th year students of Engineering in Physics and the head of the team ORCA said, “With an acceleration of 0-100kmph in 3.47 seconds, ORCA is faster than any other sports car made by Porsche, Tesla or Audi. Not only is its acceleration a record, it is the first time we have a special steel-frame chassis with carbon-fibre manufactured body, which not only reduces the weight but also stabilises the car at high speeds.”

“The car is awesome to drive thanks to its light weight, and its stability increases at high speeds,” added another 4th year student and the regular driver of ORCA.
