JNU Row: Kanhaiya Kumar’s Bail Plea Hearing Adjourned Till August 26

Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) leader Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea hearing has been adjourned till August 26 on Saturday after Kumar with two other applied for regular bail at Delhi High Court on Saturday.

Kanhaiya Kumar as well as Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who has been charged with sedition, are currently on six months bail by the Delhi HC from March. They were charged with sedition in connection with the event held at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in February, where the anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.

Earlier, on August 17 the Delhi HC had dismissed Kumar’s plea and asked him to approach the lower court for the same. Justice PS Teji had said, “The present application is dismissed with liberty to the petitioner to move the sessions court.”

In his application to the Delhi HC Kumar has mentioned that he has not violated any of the conditions imposed on him by the Delhi HC during his bail and would continue to follow them. He has also added that he has been helping the investigative agencies whenever they call him.

Kumar’s advocate Sushil Bajaj said that since the Delhi Police had not yet filed the charge sheet in the matter, Kumar deserved regular bail.

While granting bail to Kumar, Khalid and Bhattacharya, Justice Pratibha Rani in a 23-page order had asked the student leader not to attend any event that may be termed as anti-national.
