Raksha Bandhan: Festival To Celebrate Love Between Brothers And Sisters

Raksha Bandhan is the festival occurs on full moon day or Purnima in Shravana month according to the Hindu mythology. This festival is hugely celebrates love and duty between brothers and sisters.

Although it is a Hindu festival, the festival also famous to celebrate any brother-sister relationship between men and women who are relatives or biologically unrelated.

Rakhi-Purnima

On this day sister tie a Rakhi (sacred thread) on her brother’s wrist which symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well being, and the brother’s lifelong vow to protect her.

In Nepal this festival is celebrated as Janai Purnima. The festival is observed at Western India, Mauritius and major parts of Nepal. Hindus in Pakistan as well as non-resident Indian across the globe celebrates the festival as well.

Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit literally mean the the tie or knot of protection. Raksha means protection and Bandhan is a verb to tie. It is an ancient tradition where sister tie Rakhi on her brothers wrist and then pray for his well being to the god. In return, brothers vows to protect her sister from any calamity.

According to Panchanga (calender), the best time to tie the Rakhi is during Aparahna, which is late afternoon. Myth says that one should never tie Rakhi during Bhadra period. Bhadra is a malicious time which should be avoided for any auspicious work. One can easily find the time of Bhadra by referring to the Panchanga.
