NRI beautician gets bail in rash driving case

An NRI beautician, who was sentenced for five years imprisonment for her rash driving in 2010, was granted bail on Monday by the court in Maharashtra that convicted her. While granting the bail as she appealed to the High Court, the trial court has mentioned that there was a fairly good chance of succeeding in her appeal against the verdict.

The court observed that the appeal has a fair chance for at least reduction of sentence. The state government, on the other hand, has also appealed to the High Court for an enhanced punishment. It was in last November, that the trial court sentenced Ms Nooriya Haveliwala to five years of imprisonment.

It may be noted that Nooriya drove under the influence of alcohol and rammed into a police check post on January 30, 2010. Her rash driving killed a police constable and a motorcyclist. She was then arrested and since then trials were going on. The lawyer of Ms Nooriya has said that the case was inevitable accident and not intentional.
