In the rally, which was organized in support of a missing student of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Najeeb Ahmad, police detained over 250 students along with the mother as well as the sister of Najeeb Ahmad near India Gate on Sunday afternoon.

The rally was carried out near India Gate by the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) in protests against the inability of the police as well as the JNU administration in locating Ahmad. The students have also alleged that the Police misbehaved with the protesters as well as Ahmad’s father Fatima Nafees.

They have also said that the students were not allowed to stage their protests at India Gate and were permitted to stage their demonstrations at the Jantar Mantar.

The General Secretary of JNUSU, Satarupa Chakraborty said, “Delhi Police misbehaved with Najeeb’s mother. She was beaten up and dragged into the Police van. His sister was also detained.”

Surprisingly, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal rushed to Mayapuri Police Station, where she was kept after arresting and camped their till she reaches the university after release.

Reports said that the students from Delhi University as well as the Jamia Millia Islamia had gathered for the protests. The way of the protesters was blocked by the police when the tried to approach India Gate. Few of them, after arresting, were taken to the Mandir Marg police station as well as others were kept at Parliament Streets and Mayapuri police stations.

President of JNUSU, Mohit Kumar Pandey said, “Police have brutally beaten us and broken our phones. Many protesters have been detained. The cops were openly threatening to shoot us.”

The statement produced by the Police said, “Delhi police stopped the protesters at various locations and dissuaded them from moving towards India Gate. Some of them were taken to the police station to stop them from marching ahead.”

Joint Commissioner (southwest) Deepender Pathak said that Nafees was asked to enter the bus after the pandemonium in the protests. However, she refused and lay down in the middle of road.

Pathak said, “We waited for her to move to the bus on her own, but later had to lift and take her inside the vehicle. Adequate number of woman constables were deployed for this.”
