China Isolated As 47 Members Backed India’s NSG Bid, India Looking For Final Push On Friday

China has been totally isolated as 47 members of the 48-nation elite Nuclear Suppliers Group backed India’s admission into the group despite India has not signed the Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty. However, Thursday’s meeting could not end at conclusion on India’s admission and India will now look forward on Friday’s meeting to get China’s backing for its seat into the NSG.

On Thursday, in NSG plenary meeting, after the debate faced a deadlock, special meeting was called and the delegated debated until midnight. But no conclusion emerged from the meeting. China was firm on its stand that India could not become the NSG member as it has not signed the non-proliferation treaty.

Earlier, In Tashkent, prime minister Narendra Modi met Chinese president Xi Jinping on the sidelines of SCO and China’s objection to India’s NSG membership was the main issue in the 45-minute discussion between the two countries. External Ministry official spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, “PM Modi urged China to make a fair and objective assessment of India’s application and judge it on its own merit. PM said that China should contribute to the emerging consensus in Seoul.”

In the plenary meeting, at the end of Thursday, Brazil and South Africa, two members in BRICS along with India and China, stood behind India despite their initial objection to non-NPT countries. Turkey reiterated its support to both India and Pakistan as NSG members, although Pakistan’s application could not even taken up for the discussion on Thursday. Austria, Ireland and Switzerland questioned the process but have allotted their support to India’s NSG application

According to report, discussion on India’s admission to NSG was not scheduled in the plenary meeting. However, Japan raised the issue of India’s NSG bid as a non-NPT country.

It would be highly interesting to see what steps will be taken by the top members who are supporting India’s membership into the NSG such as United States, Britain. China, on Thursday said that China’s opposition to India’s NSG bid will not affect its bilateral ties. However, experts say that if China stays firm on its stand to block India’s application into the NSG, few effects will be seen on bilateral ties between the two countries. US State Dept today said that they hope that India and China, despite being opposing each other in the NSG, would further nourish their relations on bilateral level.

Although China is opposing India’s NSG seat and India might not manage to get membership in the current meeting keeping in mind the admission process, India has successfully managed to showcase China as the only opposition to India’s NSG admission, according to experts.
